-- Ancient Wood Preservation, Restoration and Ancient Wood Cultural Industry
Shaanxi, China
Dear Sir/Madam,
International Wood Culture Society (IWCS) and Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University are jointly sponsoring the 2010 International Wood Culture Symposium - Ancient Wood Preservation, Restoration and Ancient Wood Cultural Industry on 23 - 24 October 2010 in Yangling, Shaanxi province.
International Wood Culture Symposium is sponsored by International Wood Culture Society and participated by enthusiasts in wood relevant areas around the world. Each symposium (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009) not only attracted representatives from organizations in the fields of scientific research of wood industry, education, industry associations and the business community, but also obtained active responses from organizations in the fields of literature and art, the study of folk custom and non-government environmental protection organizations. This year's symposium continues the spirit of previous meetings -- cultural heritage: the past, present and future. The symposium will showcase the distinct characteristics of wood culture in northwestern China, deeply explore the legacy value of ancient wood culture, trace the history of ancient wood, achieve and spread the spirit of humanity, protect and repair the relic and carve a new path to develop a cultural industry of ancient wood. We believe the symposium will strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the cultural, academic, industrial and other related area.

10. The overview of Shaanxi province
As one of the major origins of primitive human beings in China and Chinese national history,
Shaanxi province is a political, economic and cultural center for many dynasties in Chinese
history. There are 13 dynasties such as Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang that established their capitals
here successively. It has a long history and rich culture.
Shaanxi province was formerly Yongzhou, one of the nine prefectures in ancient China. 1.1 millions
years ago, Lantian Man lived in the region and multiplied on both sides of the river.
Banpo site located east of Xian shows the progress and a civilization of a matriarchal society
6,000 to 7,000 years ago. About 5,000 years ago, founding fathers Emperor Tan and Emperor
Yellow led their own tribes to create a Chinese civilization in Loess Plateau, north of Shanxi. Hou
Ji created the agricultural civilization. Cang Ji created the Chinese character. Zhang Qian
established Silk Road. Sima Qian's Shiji is an excellent book among the biographies and
historical records. These remarkable successes demonstrate the brilliance and glitter of the
ancient civilization in Shaanxi province.
Yang Ling lies in the hinterland of the extensive central Shaan Xi plain by the valley of the Wei River,
which is 82 kilometers east of Xian and 86 kilometers west of Baoji. Travel is very convenient for
tourists because of the Eurasia Bridge, the Longhai Railway, the highway from Xian to Baoji and the
middle road passing through this area. On 29 July 1997, the construction of the Yangling New and
High Agrotechnology Development and Model Zone in Yangling, Xiangyang district was approved. It
spans a surface area of 22.12 square kilometers directly under the jurisdiction of the Shaanxi
government and the management of new state-level and high tech zones. With more than ten years
of hard work, the Yangling Model Zone has the most growth potential of Shaanxi economy and
highlights Western development. It has been proved to be one of the top ten industrial parts opened
to APEC, one of the five high-tech zones fully supported by the government and one of six
agricultural cooperation experimental zones along the cross-strait.
Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University offers 11 subjects including agriculture, science,
engineering, economics, management, liberal arts, law, philosophy, history, medical science and
education. It also offers 7 state-level key disciplines and specialties including plant pathology, soil
science, agriculture and water engineering, clinical veterinary science, fruit, animal genetics and
breeding, and agricultural economics and management. In addition, it offers two national key
(cultivation) disciplines including crop genetics and breeding, agricultural entomology and pest
control. Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University has a strong research department in the
agricultural field with many key disciplines at the provincial and ministerial levels and many key
laboratories at national and provincial levels.
We sincerely hope to see you in Shaanxi and share your ideas with worldwide colleagues.
